One common example is the distribution of lizards in the Caribbean islands. The lizards mostly eat the same types of food—insects. However, they can live in different microhabitats within the context of their larger habitat. For example, some lizards can live on the forest floor while others may live higher up in the habitat in trees. This differentiation and partitioning of resources based on their physical location allows the different species to coexist more effectively with one another. Food Partitioning Examples Additionally, species can more effectively coexist based on food partitioning. For example, among species of lemur monkeys, food may be discriminated by the chemical characteristics of the food. Food partitioning based on plant chemistry can play an important role. This allows different species to coexist while eating similar yet chemically different foods. Similarly, species may have an affinity for different parts of the same food. For example, one species may prefer a different part of the plant than another species, allowing them to effectively coexist. Some species may prefer the leaves of the plant while others prefer the plant stems. Species can also partition food based on other characteristics such as different activity patterns. One species may consume most of their food during a certain time of day while another may be more active at night. Long-Term Effects of Resource Partitioning By partitioning out resources, species can have long-term coexistence with one another in the same habitat. This allows both species to survive and thrive rather than one species causing the other to go extinct, as in the case of complete competition. The combination of intraspecific and interspecific competition is important in relation to species. When different species occupy slightly different niches in relation to resources, the limiting factor for population size becomes more about intraspecific competition than interspecific competition. Similarly, humans can have profound effects on ecosystems, particularly in causing species to go extinct. I have been actively involved in teaching, tutoring, and mentoring high school and undergraduate research students throughout my doctoral and postdoctoral work at the City University of New York (CUNY). Many schools visit zoos to know more about endangered species and the way to conserve them. However,there are also some disadvantages of keeping animals in the zoo. Firstly,it can’t be denied that some zoos misuse and violate the animal rights. The workers in some zoos treat animals in a cruel manner. Secondly,animals are kept in zoos for a long time ,they may lose their instinct ability to survive in the natural environment. Animals are equal to human beings. Nobody can suffer from depriving of liberty. In conclusion,we have no right to keep animals in zoos. In my opinion,it is wrong to keep animals in zoos. We should respect animal rights. During this vision Mary told Bernadette to dig in a specific site ,where Bernadette would discover a spring. A spring of water began to flow at the place she indicated. Gradually, Lourdes became a place for pilgrims, Pilgrims arrive in great numbers throughout the year from all over the world. There are special masses , Pilgrims light up candles, sing Lourdes hymns and pray; the rosary is a form of prayer used by pilgrims at Lourdes. The main attraction to Lourdes is for healing purposes. In Jerusalem pilgrims walk along the Via Dolorosa which was the route that Jesus took from Pilates judgment hall to Calvary where he was crucified. They stop to pray at the Stations of the Cross (the original places where Jesus stopped on his way to Calvary). The Via Dolorosa leads to the church of the Holy Sepulchre, inside this church is the place where Jesus was crucified and, in the other part of the building was the traditional place of his burial and the place where he rose from the dead. Elsewhere in the Holy land Christians may want to visit the river Jordon and collect some water from the river in which Jesus was baptized. Nazareth is another option, this is a place where Jesus grew up and a modern church covers the traditional site of the place where the Holy Family lived. Eucharist can be celebrated at the alters near the Sea of Galilee. Overall, I believe that Christians travel to pilgrimages to step aside from the day to day life to focus more strongly on their faith. At pilgrimages Christians can share their beliefs with other Christians from other countries. By this their faith is strengthened as they are becoming more aware that they are part of a worldwide fellowship. Some Christians may find their attitude to their faith does not change at all, hence continuing spiritually as though the pilgrimage had never happened.

He would begin to cry and become very distressed. The method that I used with this child was going over to him and talking and comforting whilst distracting him so his mum could leave and to calm him down. I used this strategy in this situation as it is the best way to overcome this situation is comforting the child so that they feel more comfortable in the nursery setting. This is good as it helps the child become distracted from his mother which means the mother can leave the classroom. I took the little boy over to the paint and asked him to paint a picture for his mum while he was doing this he forgot about her and she was able to leave without him noticing and becoming upset again, once the little boy had finished painting he moved on to play with something else and settled in fine that day. In my placement there is one girl who does not like sharing her toys with one other child and would always scream if the child went near the toys she was playing with. The strategy I used to overcome this was talking to the girl about how she has to share and how the two little girls could be friends if they were nice to each other. I thought this was the best strategy as the little girl did begin to share with the other girl and started to get on with the little girl and was able to play with her all the time instead of screaming when she came close to her. I explained to the little girl how this was not nice what she was doing and asked her if the other children did it to her and she didn’t have any toys to play with would she like it and she replied no, so I told her that she can’t be doing it to the little girl or anyone else in the class as it would make them upset. Literary Essays and School Essays Literary Essays and School Essays Literary Essays and School Essays By Maeve Maddox As a literary term, essay is defined as â€Å"a short non-fiction composition.† What many people mean by â€Å"essay† these days, however, is quite different from what it means as a literary genre. The Literary Essay The word essay comes from the French word essayer â€Å"to try, to attempt† and still has this meaning in English, both as a noun and as a verb: Thats his first essay into the cattle business. We shall essay to remedy the situation. The first writer to apply the term to the type of reflective and entertaining pieces he liked to write was the Frenchman Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592). The writer who popularized the essay form in English was Francis Bacon (1561-1626). For the professional writer, the essay is the ideal genre with which to practice the writing craft. It offers the opportunity to focus on a topic and discover what one thinks about it. In a much quoted passage from his Collected Essays, Aldous Huxley describes the essay as a literary device for saying almost everything about almost anything.† Huxley says that essays can be studied â€Å"most effectively within a three-poled frame of reference† and goes on to identify the â€Å"three poles† as: the pole of the personal and the autobiographical the pole of the objective, the factual, the concrete-particular the pole of the abstract-universal Huxley’s opinion is that most essayists are at home in one, or at most, two, of the three types of essay. The writer comfortable with all three writes â€Å"the most richly satisfying essays.† Montaigne remains a model for modern essayists because he was able to combine the three poles. George Orwell is another useful model. For more recent examples of the literary essay, browse the pages of such publications as The Village Voice and Slate. How Long is an Essay? Although an essay is defined as â€Å"a short non-fiction composition,† in the hands of a professional writer with plenty to say, it can be pretty long. The essays of Montaigne and Bacon, for example, can run to 4,000 words. The famous essay â€Å"Self-Reliance† by American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) exceeds 10,000 words. For the non-professional writer, the high school student applying for college, for example, the â€Å"essay† is quite short. College entrance essays fall in the 500-700 word range. It’s rare that a high school student or college freshman is asked to write an essay any longer than 1.000 words. The greatest difference between the literary essay and the school essay is that the literary essay springs from the interests of the writer and can be a joy to write. The essay written as a school assignment is often regarded by the writer as drudgery. The Essay as Chore Two main reasons that essay writing is perceived as a chore by students are 1) they don’t want to do it 2) they’ve had insufficient reading experience. We learn our first language by hearing it spoken. We absorb the forms of written language by reading it. Students with limited reading experience will find essay writing more difficult than those who are avid readers. They have not internalized the patterns of written English. As a result, sentences written by ill-read students seldom vary from simple or compound. The most common coordinating conjunction found in this type of essay is and. The most common subordinating conjunctions are because, then, and before. The reading level of this type of â€Å"assignment essay† rarely rises above sixth grade. That in itself is not necessarily a bad thing within the framework of communication. Much popular material is written at this level. The vocabulary in student essays tends to fluctuate between the elementary and the exotic. Many, if not most, high school students acquire advanced vocabulary by studying word lists, not by encountering them in the context of books. As a result they often misuse words because of insufficient understanding of their meanings. Nevertheless, even without a strong reading background students can master the skill of producing a five-paragraph essay that is acceptable for most school assignments. The Five-Paragraph Essay The five-paragraph essay is often criticized for being too restricted; too cut-and-dried. It is said to inhibit creativity. Perhaps. But not all the young people being asked to write essays are gifted with creativity. And even the creative ones need to learn the basics of composition before soaring off to their creative heights. The five-paragraph essay remains a useful workhorse. Parts of the Essay Every essay has three main parts. In the five-paragraph essay they are arranged this way: Introduction (first paragraph): states the topic and theme; Briefly states three points to be made about the theme. Body (paragraphs 2-4): each paragraph expands and supports one of the points mentioned in the introduction. Conclusion (paragraph 5): restates the theme and sums up the argument in a satisfying way. The Hardest Part of Writing an Essay Essay writing guides can help, but the most important aspect of any writing assignment lies with the writer. Only the writer can answer this most important question: What do you want to say? Time spent in pinning down the topic and theme of your essay is never wasted. Don’t begin writing before you know 1. what you are writing about 2. what you want to say about it 3. to whom you are saying it With school assignments, the essay topic is often part of the assignment, but the student is usually given a choice of more than one. If at all possible, choose a topic in which you feel some interest. Have a destination. It’s not enough to say you’re writing about â€Å"war† or â€Å"civic responsibility† or â€Å"gun control.† What do you want to say about the topic? What do you want your reader to feel about it after having read your essay? One of the most frequent faults of freshman essays is that they leave the reader wondering â€Å"so what?† Who’s your reader? Picturing your reader in your mind as you write will influence your writing style. If a teacher is your target audience, nonstandard vocabulary and grammar are not an option. Supporting Statements A common fault among student writers is the failure to distinguish between a general statement and a supporting statement. Inexperienced writers often attempt to support one general statement with another general statement: My sister is annoying. She really bothers me. I can’t stand some of the things she does. All three of these statements are generalizations. Specific, concrete examples are needed to support general statements. General statement: My sister is annoying. Supporting statement: She eats my favorite cereal on the sly and then puts the empty box back into the cabinet. How does Miler create a sense of tension and conflict between John and Elizabeth Proctor at the beginning of Act Two? In Act Two, John and Elizabeth Proctor are conversing and there are signs to indicate that there are tensions occurring in their marriage. Although the main theme of the ‘The Crucible’ is Witchcraft, this Act concentrates mainly on the relationship of John and Elizabeth. Miller uses a variety of dramatic devices, like stage directions to promote this point. Prior to this act the girls have named the witches and John has returned from Salem. Considering that this is where Abigail (whom John had an affair with) resides, it does not improve his dying marriage and relations with his wife. Miller begins by setting the tone for the scene and describes the front room of Proctor’s house. The room is described as ‘low, dark and rather long’; this immediately gives the impression of a threatening and hostile place. Coupled with the empty room, this could signify loneliness and symbolize the emptiness and lack of affection within the marriage. The word ‘halts’ is used to depict an image of a shocked John as he hears his wife singing, upon his entrance to the house. Miller could have decided to include this piece of information in order to show the audience how Elizabeth is rarely in a good frame of mind – perhaps due to her failing marriage. John then proceeds to add further seasoning to the food that Elizabeth has already prepared. This action is one of many devices used demonstrating the lack of satisfaction and need for more within the marriage. When Elizabeth does eventually enter to meet John, Miller is quick to show through her first line of speech â€Å"What keeps you so late? It’s almost dar... ... be more romantic and Miller shows an opposing side to his character, the pause indicates their discomfort and when Elizabeth’s ‘back is turned to him’ this is yet another effective way of making the audience notice the increasing distance between them, both physically and emotionally. Finally John then gives up and decides to try and address the problem that is bothering his wife. Miller’s stage directions ‘she doesn’t want friction, and yet she must’ portrays an image of a woman caught in two minds. Elizabeth wants to remain a good, obedient wife however she cannot resist challenging John about his whereabouts which led to his late arrival. The place of ‘Salem’ is mentioned and this could be Miller’s way of Elizabeth inadvertently or perhaps indirectly showing her distrust towards John. When John learns of Marry Warren’s presence in Salem his anger.

Cyber Bullying Essay

I watched a close friend of mine in high school become the victim of cyber bullying. She slowly started drifting from her friends, her family and other people close to her. She changed the way she looked at herself, other people, and the overall world. Depression is one of the largest known symptoms or effects of bullying in general. Some other effects could be the idea of low self-esteem, along with self-worth. The idea of having no trust in other people, or the world is another common symptom. Many people say that there are not immediate or long term effects to cyber bullying, but I argue that cyber bullying has immediate effects which some can be long term, and in extreme cases life altering. One person could end up changing someone else’s life forever due to say one text message, tweet, or Facebook post. The real question is, were the kids of the days of face to face bullying better off than the kids of our age, the age of cyber bullying? Depression, takes a toll on everyo ne’s life in all different aspects. Depression affects your mental health. The thoughts are always putting you down, which will in turn affect your self-worth. When people are always putting you down, saying you’re not good enough for other people, or yourself. Depression may be one of the most severe effects of cyber bullying; it can turn into something much more serious, such as suicide. People don’t always realize how much they can hurt another person with just actions or words. Cyber bullying, in my opinion could be much worse than just face-to-face bullying. At least, when bullying could only occur face to face, you were safe in your own home, away from your personal bully. Now within the age of cyber bullying, someone could continue to harass you even once you’re away from them. Which I feel adds to the victim of the cyber bullying’s affects. Your self-worth is very important to a person, and when you’re being talked down to, on a daily basis, you become a â€Å"self-fulfilling prophecy†. When this happens, you begin to believe all the things people are telling you, you become the person they were telling you are, even when you truly aren’t. The idea of not trusting being able to trust other people, along with people you’re close to in life, is a sad idea. You should be able to trust people in your life, people you’re with every day. When you’re unable to trust the people in your life, you begin to revert into yourself. Reverting into yourself is the idea of not being able to tell anyone else the way you’re feeling or your thoughts. Along with this idea comes a sense  of being overwhelmed to a breaking point. Being this overwhelmed in life is unhealthy, for your social health. Your social heath may not seem like an important aspect of health, but it tends to be, although it isn’t as important to some people as it is to others. Some people need to be very social, and need to be around other people. Other people don’t n eed that constant sense of company. For the person who needs that constant self of company, this is a lot more dangerous because if their social health becomes damaged enough, their mental health will also become damaged, which in an extreme case could lead to depression. Also, not being able to trust anyone around you, could turn into a question of self-trust, because you being to question your own judgment with who you choose to give your trust to. One example of cyber bullying and its effects is an ABC Family Original Movie, Cyberbully. Taylor (Emily Osment) is a high school student who finds herself as a target of cyber bullying surprisingly, by her fellow students on a popular social networking website, Cliquesters. After Taylor’s little brother hacks her account and writes an abusive status that gets her classmates to start posting insulting comments, calling her a â€Å"slut† and a â€Å"whore. After Taylor finds out what her classmates think of her, she doesn’t want to go to school anymore from the very beginning of her cyber bullying. As the rumors and bullying get worse, Taylor’s friends turn against her. Now, Taylor is without any friends; feels alone and worthless. At this point, she wants to commit suicide, an d continues to make an attempt. Once Taylor posts the suicide video, her best friend comes to be by her side and help her. Once her best friend gets there, Taylor was struggling to open the pill bottle. Realizing her best friend came to be by her side, she noticed she isn’t alone. After taking anti-depressants and having one on ones with her doctor, along some of her treatments, her doctor recommends Taylor to attend a teen therapy support group. Surprisingly, the recommended support group truly does help her. After the support groups, she felt somewhat better but she will never completely heal from cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is always there and will never completely go away. As in the movie, cyber bullying isn’t only lasting during the incidents; it’s a life-long issue. The victim will always live with the effects of their in a sense, torture. Most people assume bullying is a once in a life time experience, that it’s only lasting while the person is living through it,  this isn’t true. Especially with cyber bullying, it stays on the internet forever. Regardless, if someone deletes the pictures, the comments, the posts, it stays there forever, in the history of the internet. It’s always in the back of the person’s mind that these things are out there, for everyone to see. I personally believe that the â€Å"old days† of bullying were less psychologically damaging. Of course, every person who is a victim of any sense of bullying will always suffer from their experience. The old face-to-face bullying isn’t out there to be viewed day to day for the rest of the existence of the internet like the new online bullying. Once your face-to-face bullying incident is over, and you leave your attacker, it’s over with for that day. There won’t be any reliving this exact experience once you’re in the safety of your own home. Whereas, with cyber bullying, even though the person may not want to, they will tend to look back at the posts, comments and pictures, to see how many people have viewed this specific incident over and over again. With every view, like, and extra comment this specific thing digs deeper and deeper into the victim, it’s not becoming more public, more and more by the second. Which do you think is worse, experiencing it face to face, or your embarrassment being public to every person who has access to the internet? According to the New York Times, an innocent twelve year old took her life due to cyber bullying a long with physical abuse. Due to social networking, such as Kik Messenger and ask.fm caused Rebecca Sedwick to lose her self-esteem and most importantly, she lost herself. She was told to â€Å"drink some bleach and die† and â€Å"go kill yourself†. One of her bullies turned all of her friends against her so she had no one to either lean on, cry to nor talk to; this is what made her realize she was all alone and she started to hate herself (www.nytimes.com). Rebecca isn’t the only girl who this has happened to. Some statistics show that over twenty five percent of adolescents and teens have been bullied repeatedly through their cell phones or the Internet and over half of young people do not tell their parents when cyber bullying transpires (www.bullyingstatistics .org). Rebecca was somewhat smart, she told her parents what was going on online and through text messaging but her parents help, wasn’t good enough. Cyber bullying is definitely worse than regular bullying. When someone gets  bullied, the victim can run to their home or to a safe place; in cyber space, that safe place doesn’t exist. In England, a survey was taken with children of ages between eleven and nineteen, statistics show that twenty three percent of girls and fifteen percent of boys have been a victim of cyber bullying while six percent of girls and eight percent of boys have admitted that they cyber bullied others. Thirty one percent of girls and twenty percent of boys have witnessed cyber bullying but did nothing about it. Fifty four percent of girls and thirty percent of boys admitted they have known someone who has been a victim while thirty three percent of girls and fifteen percent of boys also admitted they knew someone who has cyber bullied. Shockingly, thirty percent of girls and forty eight percent of boys have never experienced cyber bullying (O’Brien, 6). This survey was taken in 2006; you can only imagine how much the numbers could have possibly changed to 2013. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be cyber bullied? I always wondered what it would feel like to not have a safe place to be until the middle of my freshman year; I became a victim of cyber bullying. It was the worst experience of my life and I’m still scared to post things on social media. Nothing is worse than feeling alone and empty. When I was a freshman in high school, a website called formspring.me became popular. Formspring.me is a website where anyone with an account can ask people questions anonymously. Most people on this website can be extremely personal, abusive, and cruel. While surprisingly, others can be helpful. I know I’ve made mistakes in my life, everyone has, but I was viciously attacked online to where I would cry every night. I was told to â€Å"go die, no one would actually care† or â€Å"please kill yourself†. Most of my messages were mostly the same and I was so unsure as to what to do with myself. I was bullied in school and online and I had no place to feel safe. I figured no one wanted me to be around, and everyone else’s life wouldn’t be any different if I wasn’t around. I felt this way until my cousin came to my house to talk to me. She made me feel like I was loved and not alone; she later brought in my entire family where I started to feel I used to before I was a victim. My family made me feel that I have a purpose in life and I was brought into this world for a reason. I am definitely not the same person I was. Even though cyber bullying is a vicious form of mental abuse, I believe it has made me a better person, stronger. Many people claim that cyber bullying isn’t as bad of an issue as old fashioned face to face bullying, that there are no long lasting effects, that the person doesn’t suffer as much. That’s wrong, cyber bullying is in reality worse than old fashioned face to face bullying. The person, (victim) can’t get away, they’re harassment is always there, always lurking waiting for the computer to be turned on, or social media to be checked on the smart phone. Cyber bullying doesn’t end, it stays on the internet forever, it’s there for other people to always see. Victims of cyber bullying tend to commit more suicide, suffer from long term depression, and socially isolate themselves more frequently than the victims of physical (face to face) bullying do. In conclusion, cyber bullying affects a person much more detrimentally than physical bullying will. With cyber bullying the harsh words of the person are always there to be viewed, not only by the person being put down. Anyone with access to the internet has access to the downgrading things being said to this person. The suicide thoughts and reminders of the degradement are always there for the person to look back on, which in turn, makes the person agree with what’s being said about them. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and the person now feels that that’s the way they feel, they become what is being said about them. The effects of bullying only last as long as the reminders, and with cyber bullying, they never go away. My Experience At Temple Tots Preschool - 975 Words

I was lucky enough to get to observe two of my children through this observation assignment. My three year old daughter who attends preschool at Temple Tots, here in Portsmouth. Also my youngest son, who is in second grade at Portsmouth West Elementary School. I really enjoyed the observations, and not just because my children were there. Reading and trying to imagine what a classroom is really like is more difficult than it would seem. Actually getting to be present during school and feeling the atmosphere created is a completely different experience. For my first observation I was at Temple Tots Preschool. I was supposed to observe my daughters teacher, but she was absent due to illness. They combined two classes for the day and allowed me to observe the other teacher. This teacher has been a teacher for over twenty years. She easily made accommodations for the extra students. She had a total for the day of fourteen students. During the students morning free time she ga thered up extra material she needed for the extra students. The program here has some day care like qualities. There is no attendance policy. Children are dropped off at any time and can be picked up at any time. This is convenient to the parent but would be frustrating as the teacher. The school just keeps to their schedule for lessons and if a child is not present for worksheet time than it is sent home with the student. The room is divided up into areas.
